What are your favorite choices for anti-aging food and drink? Guest blogger Samantha Gray shares her “how to stay young from the inside out” list below.

Stores that push new age products and health-centric fare tend to carry items touted as having anti-aging qualities. The problem is that a great deal of things could fall under the umbrella of an “anti-aging” product because not everyone agrees on what the term means. Some products claim to slow aging, others promise to reverse it altogether, while others state that they help people merely age gracefully.

I’d like to talk about some food and drinks that definitely do have anti-aging properties, and by that I mean that they’re healthy enough to help you live a longer and happier life. What else could you reasonably ask for in a product?

Red Wine

A recent study reaffirmed what some scientists and drinkers have believed all along: red wine has considerable anti-aging properties. Specifically, red wine has a chemical known as resveratrol that is believed to aid in the anti-aging process. Scientists found that mice could benefit from ample doses of resveratrol in conjunction with a certain gene involved in cell function and lifespan. So enjoy a glass for your health and long life!

Soybeans

Soybean and soy based products are also thought to possess great anti-aging qualities. Products like soy milk, tofu, and soy-based substitute dairy products are rich in omega-3 fatty acids, a nutrient that offers a wide array of health benefits. Omega-3 fatty acids are great for maintaining proper cell growth and function, aiding in brain and heart health. soy has other benefits to health, including isoflavones and phytic acids, both of which are thought to reduce certain types of cancers. Soy products are becoming more and more prevalent in grocery stores, so don’t hesitate to try some out on your next trip!

Berries

Another great (and natural) anti-aging food is the berry. They’re rich in antioxidants that help fight cancer and other disorders, filled with vitamins and minerals necessary to nutrition, and have few calories to worry about. Some berries (like blueberries) have the same anti-aging agent resveratrol as does most red wines. They’re also a great source of fiber. Blueberries, blackberries, strawberries, and raspberries are just some of the berries that offer these substantial health benefits. And what’s more, they taste great.

Green Tea

The last item on our list is perhaps one of the best drinks for anti-aging properties. Green tea was originally cultivated and consumed in China, but has since taken popularity worldwide because of its great taste and clear health benefits. Green tea is rich in anti-oxidants, particularly flavonoids, which are great nutrients for fighting potential cancer causing agents, as well as other anti-oxidants which perform similar functions. Green tea also has essential vitamins and minerals (who knew?) and is believed to increase heart health.

What are your favorite foods with anti-aging properties?

Seems like every week, there’s a story of someone getting fired for a tweet that was meant as a joke. The length of 140 characters isn’t enough space to build context or convey body language, but it is long enough to earn harsh consequences.

Stories about people facing consequences that impact their careers long-term have caused me to rethink my social media engagement strategy.

Like many people, I tweet links and share funny stories on my social media accounts, but with the daily news of more people getting into trouble with their tweets, texts and other digital sharing methods, I’m starting to worry that I may be, unknowingly, putting myself at risk.

Before you retweet or hit that like button…

Someone can easily add an unsavory link to a long thread and sabotage the entire conversation.

Here is an example followed by my plan for protecting myself from stepping into a sticky mess using digital media.

Ending up in a bad position, like jail, for instance

I’ve read recently about college students taking secret video of their roommate’s private moments–without their consent or knowledge–and then posting them online. After the people in the videos complained to the authorities, those mean-spirited students found themselves facing being deported (in one case) and facing jail time. I’m sure that outcome was not considered as a possibility–nor was it part of the joke.

Scarier still is the ease of hitting “retweet” or “like”. It is really that simple to become part of the crime.

“I didn’t film it. I only shared it,” is going to get you in trouble as a cyber bully. It takes less than a minute to join in with someone’s sick idea of a joke.

How I’m protecting myself

My latest strategy for avoiding entanglements and accidentally offending people is to stay out of long conversational strings on Facebook. I don’t always read what people have said before me.

Now that I realize people are getting into trouble over being connected to serious cyberspace crime, I’m worried that someone could have easily slipped in a link or a comment that I didn’t check (or notice), that could end up coming back to bite me–especially if I’m updating a status from my smart phone. I rarely take the time to read the whole thread. I don’t know what links other people’s friends may have connected to the conversation. There’s no reason for me to trust them.

Just say, No!

Multiple people showed contempt for the victims by sharing those recordings without worrying about the consequences. It’s very simple to find out who shared the link. Those actions can’t be hidden.

I train 3 or 4 times a week in the sport of mixed martial arts. I know how to do some damage. In combat sports fight language, following someone’s lead that leaves me in the position of feeling like I’m suffocating in quick sand, would be called “giving up my back and getting choked out.”

I have limited chances to recover from that move.

And the worst of it is, I put myself there.

Playing a bully for six years – and being known as the enemy of the beloved teenage magician, Harry Potter, may have warped the young actor who played Vincent Crabbe in the “Harry Potter” series. “The actor [Jamie Waylett], of West Hampstead in north London, refused to give evidence in court, but insisted in a police interview that he had only taken possession of the Molotov cocktail because he felt intimidated by peer pressure.” source

How did he end up in such a bad position?

The story continued saying that Waylett was seen drinking champagne from a bottle looted from a supermarket. He said that a friend had given it to him.

Waylett likes to smoke pot. The last time he was arrested, it was for growing cannabis at his mother’s home.

I’m seeing a pattern developing here. Did Waylett learn to be a follower by playing the back-up bully during his formative years?

Vincent Crabbe, school bully at Hogwarts and on the wrong side of the Wizard’s War

I first became aware of the magical world of Hogwarts when I sat next to a woman on a cross-country flight. She barely looked up from the book she was reading for the entire flight. When she finally took a break on our descent into LAX, I asked her what she was reading.

Her eyes sparkled as she explained all about Harry Potter from Book one. I was enchanted by the story. Her enthusiasm stayed with me. On my return trip home, I was the one with my nose glued to a book for the entire six-hour journey.

When I heard the book would be turned into a movie, I wondered about the unlucky children and grown-ups chosen to play the roles of the “bad guys.” Professor Snape. Voldemort. Dudley. Draco Malfoy and one of the members of his posse, Vincent Crabbe. The roles of Draco and his henchmen were the ones I wondered about most of all. Whoever played them would have to bear the dislike of children all over the world.

Tired of playing the character that no one likes

What if one of the kids on the wrong side decided he or she didn’t want to play that role any more? Other people are loved for being in the movie–but not Draco and his boys. Everyone has permission not to like them. For a sensitive, big kid like Waylett, escaping into his cannabis farm must have felt like a safe haven.

In court, Waylett explained that kids picked on him. He felt that there was nothing he could do about it. Maybe it was an unfortunate effort to fit in that made him accept the champagne and the gas bomb.

In real life, “Mr. Waylett, 22, who played the all-around Hogwarts bully, Crabbe in six “Harry Potter” films, was found guilty of violent disorder during the July riots by a London court on Tuesday, but cleared of intending to destroy or damage property, after video footage showed him holding a gas bomb.” source

What a sad state of affairs for this young man. Because of his recognizable face, he was picked out of the crowd on the CCTV footage. From bad to worse, now he’ll spend two years in a place where likely, he will be bullied. In a strange turn of events, Waylett may have to finally take responsibility for himself and grow up.

I’ve been watching a new reality show on the SyFy TV channel called “Monster Man”. It’s about a family who work together creating monsters for Hollywood movies. Each week, viewers watch two different monsters being created for two different clients. Deadlines are short. Tempers flare when the custom designs don’t come together as expected or take longer to complete. Clients (movie directors) need the make-up or costumes on set according to their shooting schedule. “We’re chasing daylight here!”

The pressure to create and design monsters according to specifications from the clients falls squarely on the shoulders of the father and his daughter. Dad taught his daughter the business. She has been helping him since she was a teenager. Now, she is as capable as her dad, but not as experienced.

Fighters, take your positions!

Each week they go head-to-head over how to go about fulfilling the client’s expectations. The father wants things to go his way–not because he’s right–but because he’s the elder, in my opinion. His daughter’s ideas have worked well. That doesn’t mean that every idea works, but she is deserving of respect for her knowledge and creativity.

What it looks like in real-time

In this family affair, Cleve works with both of his daughters and his ex-wife.

Cleve Hall (Dad): “Working with your ex-wife? Not recommended…I refer to Constance as my mini-me. She has been working with me since she was 13 years old.”

Sofia (mum and ex-wife): “Constance has gotten to the point where she could build one of these monsters herself. I think that’s why they butt heads so much. They’re both very stubborn. They both hold their ground. It can escalate into an all-out war. It can definitely get very ugly.”

Johnnie (co-worker): “When they start bickering, he’s no longer ‘dad’, he’s just ‘Cleve’.”

That is a defensive action taken by Constance to maintain professional distance.

Constance (daughter): “My dad’s been making monsters since before I was born…I had an idea that very easily could have cut our patterning time in half, but Dad shot me down without even giving me a chance…He just doesn’t want to listen.”

Cleve: “I’m the first guy who’s always open to new innovations. This was just not the time for it.”

After the successful completion of a monster effect on the set with the actors and the film crew, Constance congratulated herself.

Constance: “No one wanted to trust me, but obviously I had it in hand the whole time…I’m feeling pretty confident right now. Not that anyone admitted they were wrong or said ‘thanks’ or anything like that. But it feels pretty good. Being right usually does. ”

Dodging blows

The danger in closing off your mind to new ideas or doing it someone else’s way, is that you might miss something important that you really needed to know. You set up a pattern of people not bothering to tell you things because they don’t feel like arguing with you.

As needed, Sofia steps in to act as the go-between to manage the “creative bickering” between Constance and Cleve. They succeed in completing (the deliverables) the monsters, but their relationship is strained.

When respect is withheld, it can feel like you have to keep advancing–moving forward, dropping “one-two” punches and deflecting any return strikes. Dynamic debates are useful, but not if it feels like you are dodging blows from an opponent. When you’re in a battle to constantly prove your worth, it’s exhausting. It never stops. There’s no bell to signal the end of a round.

Can you earn the respect of someone who doesn’t want to give it to you?

I think it might be easier to get a leopard to change his spots than it would be to gain the respect of someone who purposely withholds it from you.

In their minds, having respect for you might mean that you are their equal.

If you are seen as his or her equal, then there is a perceived loss of power. Anyone withholding respect from you has deemed you “not worthy” of respect, maybe not worthy of power.

What can you do?

Give up trying to earn that person’s respect. He or she has too much to lose. It doesn’t make them feel good to show you respect. Instead, spend more time with people who do respect you and your work.

How Constance handles it

Constance: “We still have a ton of work to do. So, I’m just going to stay away from him–and keep my distance and be as productive as I can.”

Fight back and restore your dignity by taking the following actions:

Recognize that this person’s opinion is one of many opinions — who else agrees with him or her? How do other people receive your ideas?

Make a list of the people who respect your input.

Get more than one opinion on your work whenever possible.

Limit the number of meetings where just the two of you meet so that other people can overhear the interaction between you and the person who is withholding respect.

Maintain functional, professional distance with the person who is withholding respect (you are not friends). Dad becomes Cleve in this example.

Look for support and reinforcement elsewhere.

Don’t cave in and stop talking or sharing your ideas.

Have respect for yourself. Believe in yourself.

Don’t stop having ideas. Recognize that his or her ideas have merit–yours do too.

Reconcile yourself to the way things are and then decide whether you want to stay or find a new situation.

Your guard comes down and you feel confident when you are around people who respect you. Your guard will be up when the person you’re speaking with has no respect for you. Don’t waste your time trying to change that person’s mind.

Here’s my question for you: if someone offers no respect for your ideas, do you respond in kind, offering no respect for their ideas? Click the green button at the top of this post marked “comments” to be taken to the comment box.

Most important points:

Find the baseline for the person’s behavior and then notice when it changes. Like someone’s voice gets higher unexpectedly.

Conversation veers in a new direction unexpectedly

Body language shifts

Expressions of contempt (feelings of moral superiority, derision, skepticism)
