Adventures in living a healthy, juicy life
by Cheryl Ragsdale
After two previously published attempts, here is the final edit of my video entitled “Kenny Florian UFC 118 Training at the Dojo, etc” .
I’ve added footage from my entire weekend including Kenny Florian working with his trainers on Thursday night before UFC 118, a little bit of what happened at the Fan Expo with Renzo Gracie and finally, a snippet of the history and lore of what happened on fight night that we UFC fans will be talking about for a very long time.
We watched history being made on August 28, 2010.
1. For the first time ever, the city of Boston hosted a UFC event. Mixed martial arts was recently legalized in Boston.
2. BJ Penn, former UFC Lightweight Champion, lost AGAIN to Frankie Edgar in a re-match to prove which man deserves the title.
3. James Toney, an extraordinary heavy weight boxing champion, took on Randy Couture, a legend in the sport of MMA. James wanted to prove that a boxer could beat a mixed martial artist.
James really should have taken his ground game more seriously. Randy, a world class wrestler, shot in low looking for an ankle and put James on his back before the boxer had a chance to land one of his signature, heavy-handed strikes.
UFC vs Boxing: Boxing took a step back and mixed martial arts took a huge step forward.
With a look of shock and surprise on his face, James went down easy and looked like a turtle on his back. It was difficult to watch.
Boxing took a step back and mixed martial arts took a huge step forward.
My prediction is that more kids will sign up for wrestling classes at school. What a great way to channel all of that aggressive energy. Wrestlers learn to respect and honor themselves and other people. Plus, they learn that sometimes, if push comes to shove, the littlest guy in the room can sweep a bigger guy off his feet.
That builds confidence.
Speaking of confidence, Kenny Florian vs Gray Maynard (a wrestler) didn’t go well for us Kenny Florian fans. Gray Maynard fought the better fight and ended up with a unanimous decision win over Kenny. Very disappointing!
In the video, towards the end, I’ve included clips of James Toney walking into the octagon for the first time ever and BJ Penn walking out of the octagon looking very disappointed.
It took me a few days to recover from the emotional events – upsets and disappointments. But, I’m really glad I have the chance to train with Kenny Florian and his brother, Keith Florian and to fall in love with a sport the way that I’ve fallen in love with MMA.
Enjoy the video!
