Meet MariaoftheSea, a self-professed Bad Mom. She’s hilarious and doesn’t take herself or motherhood too seriously. After reading a few of her 1000 reasons, maybe you’ll think of a few of your own that you might add to the “why I’m a crap mom” list. Let’s welcome Maria as she reveals her Top 5 Reasons for why she’s a “bad mom” – Cheryl Ragsdale
I am a bad mother. That is a fact.
My mother says it, my neighbours whisper it, and my blog readers confirm it on a daily basis. The fact that my son is alive and well means nothing – I am not following The Book of Parent, and therefore I must be a Bad Mom.
I started blogging a few months ago about the 1000 Reasons I’m a Bad Mom.
These are the top 5 so far:
The one that was most fun to write was Reason #18 – I nearly got us kicked out of swimming school. It’s about the day I nearly got a restraining order because my boy’s swimming school teacher sprung an unannounced test on us. My boy is 9 months old, it’s not like he was qualifying for the Olympics. I still laugh at how angry I got that day.
A personal favourite that slipped under everyone’s radar is Reason #5 – I use Judo holds on a toddler . First, because it is ABSOLUTELY TRUE that I use Judo on the tot, and second because it took me so long to get all the right images. And third because it makes my mother want to call the cops on me. But hey, I get my boy dressed in record time!
My readers’ favourite was entirely unexpected. I didn’t think that Reason #43 – My baby gets bottles of cold, old formula was very controversial, but it set off a deluge of comments and emails. He’s my baby and I’ll feed him what I want to. He may not eat it, but that’s a horse of a different colour.
If I had to describe my (poor, pathetic) parenting style using one post, this would be it: Reason #40 – I sing my boy to sleep to Stone Temple Pilots. Because in my world it takes Scott Weiland to put a baby to sleep. And the best part is that it works!
Not every reason has been funny, I’m afraid – after breaking up I had to write Reason #37 – I’m a selfish, inconsiderate egomaniac to analyse how I felt about putting my needs before other people’s and about the insane demands my baby places on me. And about airplane crash procedures.
And this is not a reason I’m a Bad Mom, but it is the best idea I have had since I started blogging: The Bad Mom Confession Booth.
In this space, moms can (and do) pour their hearts out and confess their evildoings, looking for forgiveness and understanding. I love getting those emails, they make me laugh out loud and shake my head and even tut-tut.
And they are proof that I am a Bad Mom, but so are all of us.

MariaoftheSea says “I am a single mom to a lovely boy who definitely deserves a better mother than I will ever be. Not that I’m really trying.” Visit her blog and her confession booth for more of her 1000 reasons and perhaps, to add in some reasons of your own.

I love the sound of this Maria woman. Not all of us have the time to be Supermoms but tht doesn’t mean we don’t take it seriously, or that our kids are abused/neglected. Children are a lot stronger than we all think.

Hi Cheryl,
Love your writing style, shoot from the hip. Don’t think you’re a Bad Mom, think that you are an honest Mom! Got 2 energetic children that occasionally drive me wild! but then also make my heart melt especially when they are asleep and peaceful.
Have a feeling that I shall be looking for frequent visitor points, as I enjoy your writings so much, you inspire me!
All the best
Richard

Hi Richard,
Actually, Maria wrote this post and she’s talking about her life with her son. I’m sure she’d agree with you on his ability to melt her heart. She writes to maintain her sanity and to connect with other mom’s who need a dose of humor to help them through the rough patches. I love having you around TGIF! Great to meet you and the other 100 Comment Challenge participants

I haven’t read your Judo post yet, but now I’m going to have to. I could use some fast-toddler dressing tips.
