Adventures in living a healthy, juicy life
Guest Post by Hayley Forster
For those of you who’ve been following along with Hayley’s Ultimate Goal for the summer, the anxiously awaited day is here! Read on to find out why this man is running through a fire pit wearing a sling thing and why Hayley is crazy enough to follow in his muddy footsteps – Cheryl Ragsdale
Tough Guy Challenge, UK
Well everyone, it has reached that time…holy crap!
Guess where I am going on Sunday? Oh, you don’t know?
Well, here are a few snippets of what I will be doing at the weekend…
To kick the day off, I will be running a ‘certain’ distance. Apparently, according to the organisers of this event, distance is irrelevant. Apparently, the course is so tough and undulating that the only way you can measure it is on TIME. They tell you to take your average ten mile run time and then double it to give you a good guide of how long this first section will take you… hmmmmm
I will then swiftly move on to climbing fences and in and out of ditches, over A-frames, through nettle pits, running through raging fires, climbing through swamps, over bales of hay, crawling through barbed wire, oh yes and my 2 personal favourites:
- Climbing through a series of old sewer pipes, a couple of which have dead ends which apparently you can get stuck in for hours and
- Underwater tunnels which have been voted worst obstacle for 5 years running. Apparently there are two air pockets to break up the route… oh, that is certainly re-assuring! In addition, the water is completely muddy so there is NO visibility whatsoever. According to the website, most people come out of here a little disorientated and dizzy. Well, that is if I get out at all…
After all of that, I have to repeat.
Yes you heard me right – I have to do the course again.

If you hadn’t guessed it already,
I am competing in Tough Guy this Sunday!
(or should it be Tough Gal?)
Following on from this horrendous event, my plan is to take a slow crawl back to the hotel where I will swiftly and smoothly slip into some swimwear and crawl/roll (whichever seems more appealing at the time) into the spa vicinity to collapse in a heap and let my muscles heal in the wonderous steam rooms of glory.
If I do not become unconscious during this period of time, I will proceed to (again) crawl/roll up to my room, where I will be expecting my husband to tuck me into bed, massage my remaining limbs as I fall into a pit of terrible dreams (nightmares) of the day’s events.
So – what are you doing this Sunday?
I am not entirely sure why, but even as I am sitting writing this, I have a very strange feeling of absolute terror mixed with a very high percentage of excitement.
Excitement I hear you ask? It is a mystery even to myself – after all why would a girl who is not at all physically ready for this challenge be excited to do it? Well I can take a good guess as to why it is.
Nicola and I have prepared so much for this challenge and have loved every moment of it – yes it has been awkward fitting our fitness schedule into our daily lives but it became a habit.
A habit that I hope stays with us.
Since we have put so much effort in, we are eager to see how well we perform!
Now, I am not trying to kid myself here, as there is no way I will get through this easily. I will no doubt have periods of pain, discomfort, fear and it is entirely possible there will be some tears on the way. But I am hoping these moments will get outweighed by the moments of pure hilarity of us trying to get through it in one piece!
There is a reason people do these things – to test themselves and have a ball doing it – and that is what I intend to do!
It has been very difficult to prepare for and there have been injuries on the way but the time has come – Sunday is our Judgement Day!
So when you are sitting relaxing on your Sunday afternoon, just think of me crawling through fields, dodging flames and generally laughing my way across the finish line!
I will see you on the other side – or will I?
Hayley really did finish the
Tough Guy Challenge!
