Adventures in living a healthy, juicy life
by Cheryl Ragsdale

“If you drop a piece of food, you have five seconds to pick it up before germs cling to it. This is the rule, and Dr. Oz agrees.
If the dropped food is in your sight the whole time, go ahead.
However, be warned if it is wet food such as dip, as they can collect germs instantly.”
That’s true. I believe it. I live by this rule. I have a strong constitution.
_
My considerations when I apply the 5 Second Rule:
- Who’s looking?
- Is the food I dropped wet or sticky?
- If I wipe it off before I eat it, will I mind that it dropped on the floor?
- Was it the last one?
- Did I remember to call the “5 Second Rule” before I ate whatever it was that fell on the floor? It’s like making a special agreement with God not to strike you dead with ptomaine poisoning right on the spot. If you call it first, then you’re safe.

According to Wikipedia
“There are many variations on the rule. Sometimes the time limit is modified so that it is known variously as the “three-second rule”, “seven-second rule”, “thirty-second rule”, and “five-minute rule”, among others. In some variations, the person picking up the food arbitrarily extends the time limit based on the actual amount of time required to retrieve the food. This also can vary based on the surface on which the food was dropped. In Russia there exists a similar rule: “Promptly picked up is not considered fallen”. 5 Second Rule
Um, the five minute rule doesn’t work with me.
Five minutes!! I said 5 seconds.

variation on the theme, and a WARNING to Macdonald’s lovers out there (although this applies to any fastfood joint) When I worked there if anyone ever dropped a bun or something, then the call was “what a catch!’ so that if anyone heard, they would assume the food never hit the ground….Hmmm, assume away Mr manager, Assume away….
This is known as the Mac-second rule

I live and die by this rule too (well, I live by it, and it will probably cause the dying to come quicker . but anyway)
What I like about the 5 second rule is that if you are lucky (and I mean really lucky) you can score some free ‘street candy’ when you retrieve your food! WOO HOO!
