29 blogging tips from expert bloggers – How to Avoid Phishing and Spoofing Scams

Adventures in living a healthy, juicy life
by Cheryl Ragsdale

I’ve been bumping into nefarious websites lately.

I did some research to find out what I need to do to protect myself.

Don’t Click Weird Links

phishing 29 blogging tips from expert bloggers How to Avoid Phishing and Spoofing Scams Direct from PayPal:

Usually, a phishing email will have a fake story that’s designed to lure you into clicking a link or button in the email or calling a phone number. The sender is trying to steal your identity by tricking you into revealing your password or other personal information.

You may be tempted, but don’t trust an email address. It’s pretty easy to alter and is not an indication of whether the email is real or not.
This one is easy. We will never ask you for the following personal information in any PayPal email:

  • Your full name
  • Your password
  • Driver’s license number
  • Social Security number
  • Credit and debit card numbers
  • Pin numbers or bank account numbers

We promise to never email you an attachment or software update to install on your computer.

Never install attached software or even open an attached file.

It’s not safe – it could be spyware or a virus.

Many phishing emails have links that look valid, but send you to fraudulent sites instead.

Here’s what you should do: Open a new browser window, type https://www.paypal.com and log in to your PayPal account directly.

  • If you get an email that may be fraudulent, alert us by forwarding it to spoof@paypal.com.

Five Ways to Keep Online Criminals at Bay

New York Times On Wednesday May 19, 2010, 7:45 pm EDT

Must read this one – excellent software suggestions for combating attacks that you didn’t see coming:

“Criminals have found abundant opportunities to undertake stealthy attacks on ordinary Web users that can be hard to stop, experts say. Hackers are lacing Web sites — often legitimate ones — with so-called malware, which can silently infiltrate visiting PCs to steal sensitive personal information and then turn the computers into “zombies” that can be used to spew spam and more malware onto the Internet.”

Article Directories

Switching gears from that dreadful subject.

Each week, I feature a tip from Yaro Starak’s Blog Profits Blueprint.  This week’s tip is about submitting your blog posts to article directories:

2. Submit your articles to EzineArticles.com. This is another tip that doesn't bring in hundreds of new visitors immediately (although it can if you keep doing it) but it's worthwhile because you simply leverage what you already have - your pillar articles. Once a week or so take one of your pillar articles and submit it to Ezine Articles. Your article then becomes available to other people who can republish your article on their website or in their newsletter.

How you benefit is through what is called your “Resource Box”. You create your own resource box which is like a signature file where you include one to two sentences and link back to your website (or blog in this case). Anyone who publishes your article has to include your resource box so you get incoming links. If someone with a large newsletter publishes your article you can get a lot of new readers at once.

I’ve tried this tip by sending two articles to Ezine Articles.  Now that I’m reviewing this tip, I think I haven’t put enough effort into this tactic. Something to think about (and add to my To Do list) going forward.

Specific software is very important for security purposes. Without certain software, your computer is at risk to many hackers who are wanting personal information. So many people want to affect other people over the internet, so security for my is number one. This software can be updated as hackers find new ways to hack your computer. This is essential for blogging as you often go to websites that are unknown.

Hi Cheryl, this came at a good time for me. My Twitter account got hacked. It happened once before. Someone sent me a direct message saying “You gotta see this pic of you, it’s hilarious.” When I clicked on the link my account for hacked and the same message sent on to hundreds of my follower.

Now I’m wiser and never click on any link if it sounds dodgy. But still my account got hacked a second time I have no idea how. Most of the people who got the dodgy DM knew it was spam. Two people got angry with me but it really wasn’t my fault.

Anyway,I just wanted to warn people while we were on the topic:)

Thanks for including my post here. It’s so kind of you and an amazing job you do here. I am indeed off to promote it now:) Muchas gracias amiga!
