Adventures in living a healthy, juicy life
by Cheryl Ragsdale
What does it take for you to change your behavior or take on a new habit?
Volkswagen is sponsoring a movement called the “Fun Theory”.
The Fun Theory is a delightfully creative, idea-generating game that encourages us to think about how we would solve a problem by making the solution fun to do.
Here’s their most recent winner’s winning entry…
__________
Idea: Rewarding Speed Limit Signs
Submitted by Kevin Richardson (USA)
The idea here is capture on camera the people who keep to the speed limit.
They would have their photos taken and registration numbers recorded and entered into a lottery.
Winners would receive cash prizes and be notified by post.
Better still, the winning pot would come from the people who were caught speeding.
It’s interesting to notice the difference in rewarding good behavior rather than punishing bad behaviour.
Somehow this reminds me of the male birth control pill conversation from last week’s Stay Young from the Inside Out blog carnival.
What if we had started men on birth control pills first instead of women? What would be different? I wonder what interesting answers we’d come up with if we applied the Fun Theory to the question of birth control.
Speaking of fun and good healthy ways to pass the time, what would Health Care Reform look like filtered through a Fun Theorist’s point of view? Interesting to think about…in the mean time, we have a handy Health Care Reform chart provided by Joel Ohman.
Page down to the bottom of this post to see the chart – click his link to get the code if you would like to have a copy for your blog or website. It might come in handy in case ” you may have picked up a few worms or amoebas”. See Jennifer’s post on parasites for more information.
Check the list! You just never know what you might learn…

Hi Debbie,
Wouldn’t that be great? This idea would make me slow down because I like to win things or at least think I might win something. Plus, it would annoy me to think that my speeding ticket fine might fund someone winning a nice prize. haha!
That Fun Theory is indeed interesting. I think we can also apply it to ourselves as rewarding good accomplishments rather than focusing on mistakes can oftentimes help us stay positive.

Hi Julius,
It’s an interesting way to try to find solutions in new and creative ways. Asking someone to make the solution fun encourages a twist in a way that we don’t normally consider. Fun works!
Hi, thanks for that great idea. The fun theory is good in itself but getting input from others would make it more interesting.
