Adventures in living a healthy, juicy life

There’s an unusual entry under social media on my list of “blogging tips from expert bloggers” that, at first, I thought I wouldn’t allow:
Dan Illouz presents Jewish Chat and Israel Chat posted at DanIllouz.com – Zionism, Judaism and Leadership.
“I have to admit that one of the features I thought would gain more success on this new website is the option to engage in a chat with other “sophisticated thinkers” who think about the topics of Judaism, Zionism and Leadership. Thank God, hits have been flowing into the website, but the chatroom has not been a great success. I remember I used to really look for great places to discuss these important issues with people who would help me deepen my thought.
I thought maybe the reason for the lack of chat is because people don’t know how to get to the chat room?
Well, it is incredibly simple!”

Missed Opportunity: Trackbacks
After visiting Dan’s site, I realized that I needed to honor one of my “stay young from the inside out” tips and keep an open mind.
He has the same problem we all face – directing traffic on his site.
It just wasn’t clear when I first looked.
That’s what happens when we’re only looking for what we expect to find.
Opportunities are missed because we’re not open to new information.
Following along with implementing the tools that Yaro Starak from entrepreneur’s journey recommends, here’s one that I thought I understood.
I mean, I really thought I got this one. When I read it again today, I realized that I missed an important step!
Trackback and link to other blogs in your blog posts. A trackback is sort of like a blog conversation. When you write a new article to your blog and it links or references another blogger's article you can do a trackback to their entry. What this does is leave a truncated summary of your blog post on their blog entry - it's sort of like your blog telling someone else's blog that you wrote an article mentioning them. Trackbacks often appear like comments.
This is a good technique because like leaving comments, a trackback leaves a link from another blog back to yours for readers to follow, but it also does something very important - it gets the attention of another blogger. The other blogger will come and read your post eager to see what you wrote about them. They may then become a loyal reader of yours or at least monitor you and if you are lucky some time down the road they may do a post linking to your blog bringing in more new readers.

Here’s what I missed…
When I reference another blogger’s post in my content, I ASSUME that a trackback is automatically created.
I don’t think that’s true!
Trackbacks – effective, relevant and useful
Trackbacks happen for the people who are included in my blog carnivals, like this one. But, when I happily include or reference bloggers in my general blog posts, I’ve been missing out on an opportunity to have a trackback placed on that blogger’s blog.
It is optional, of course. The receiving blogger has to accept my trackback and allow it on their site. Oh my goodness, when I think of how many times I’ve missed this…
But, that’s what makes blogging interesting. There’s always something more to learn.
Blogging has a lot in common with martial arts.
Applying good technique – as completely as possible – generates the most benefit and allows you to topple the competition ♥
Skip a step and you’re likely to end up on your back wondering what happened…

How do you create a trackback?
- On my WordPress blog, I click the box that says “allow trackbacks and pingbacks on this post”.
- In addition, I enter the link to the blog that I’ve referenced in the area marked “trackbacks”.
- If the site owner allows it, my trackback with my blog info will show up above or below the comment section.
How are you using trackbacks effectively?
- What are your thoughts on trackbacks?
- Do you allow trackbacks on your posts?
- Have you been leaving trackbacks on other blogs?

I also thought trackbacks weren’t that significant. This post has been a real eye-opener for me. I’ll try to look for previous posts where I can use trackbacks on. I know there are a lot of them.

Hi Ms. Freeman,
The question is – when you visit the blogs you link out to, do you see a notification on the receiving blog post? Bloggers who’ve sent links in to this carnival should have a trackback listed – usually above comments or maybe below – showing where a link back to my site. You won’t see that from interlinking within your own site.
