Blog Commenting – Relevant, Useful and Effective

I’ve noticed that many people read, but only a small proportion comment on blogs.

There are definite benefits to commenting on blogs – especially if you’re a blogger.  Make your blog commenting relevant, useful and effective by using it to expand your network and attract new visitors to your site.

Blog commenting is fun!  But if it feels like work, don’t do it.

comments encouraged 300x252 15 Blogging Tips From Expert Bloggers Relevant, Useful and Effective ToolsI make it a daily habit to comment on at least 5 blogs. I especially like to comment on blogs that have  a higher Alexa ranking than mine. Plus, it helps me to  network with other bloggers. It’s a nice way to introduce myself and say hello.  People do come to my blog from other blogs where I’ve left comments.

As many of you know, I’m a big fan of Yaro Starak from entrepreneur’s journey.

Yaro offers loads of excellent blogging information for free.  When I first started blogging, I downloaded his free e-book called Blog Profits Blueprint.  Each week, I’m focusing on one of Yaro’s expert blogging tips.  Let’s look at another one of his recommendations.

I make it a daily habit to comment on at least 5 blogs.

Comment on Other Blogs

“Start commenting on other blogs. Once you have your pillar articles and your daily, fresh, smaller articles your blog is ready to be exposed to the world. One of the best ways to find the right type of reader for your blog is to comment on other people’s blogs. You should aim to comment on blogs focused on a similar niche topic to yours since the readers there will be more likely to be interested in your blog.

Most blog commenting systems allow you to have your name/title linked to your blog when you leave a comment. This is how people find your blog. If you are a prolific commenter and always have something valuable to say, then people will be interested to read more of your work and hence click through to visit your blog.”

I use Andy Bailey’s comluv plug-in as an effective way to leave a link to a blog post that I choose from 5 of my recent blog posts – with the blog owner’s permission.

Have you tried it? I’m sure you’ve seen the comluv link in use on blogs you’ve visited. What’s stopping you from using it?  If you are using it, what’s been your experience with it – either positive or negative?

What about you?  What’s working for you on your blog? What would you like to change or work on next?  Please leave comments and let me know what you’re thinking.

The comment box is half-way down on the right-hand side of this post.

I’m going to start commenting more than I do. I like the idea of setting a benchmark for your blogging. Saying that you’ll comment on five blogs a day easy and fun without feeling like work. I’ll give it a shot and share what comes out of the experience!

      Hi Michelle,
It sounds like you’ve made up your mind to make a difference in the blogosphere. Other bloggers will love receiving comments from you. What goes around, comes around. I’m eager to hear what happens as a result of your commenting on 5 blogs a day :D

I am so glad you commented in my blog to remind me to visit yours again! This is a great post. I reviewed in at StumbleUpon (it wasn’t there yet) and will Tweet it again using su.pr in a bit.

I am a HUGE fan of commenting and there is a post in my Most Popular section containing traffic percentage increases and other actual results from commenting tests.

Like you I use and recommend CommentLuv and KeywordLuv. In fact, you might call me the number one cheerleader for the DoFollow CommentLuv KeywordLuv community (although I have plenty of company)!

You are my kind of blogger: freely recommending and linking to those who most deserve it like Yaro and Andy. I hope we’ll stay in touch – especially now that Andy has announced that I am the new Editor-in-Chief at CommentLuv.

Thank you so much for your compliments – you made me feel really good :D Your visit is the perfect example of why commenting is so important for bloggers. This is how we build community on-goingly. See you again soon!

I totally agree with the importance of commenting. And also with your statement that people just read, don’t comment. But I think it is also important to get people to comment. One way to do it is to answer any questions they might have promptly.
What worked well for me was when I put a check box to indicate if they want to receive follow-up comments. Many people leave it checked, receive new comments, including my answers to their questions, and they tend to come bock more often. After I set this up, I noticed a jump in the returning visitors.
Also, I am experimenting with the “top commentators” module. I hope this will be one more reason for people to come to my site, leave a comment, for now if they leave more than 4 their link will be on over 400 pages. I guess it is really worth it as long as they are constructive. And by the way, Cheryl, you are on the top of that list currently, thanks for commenting.

      Hi Tom,
I love being first on your Top Commenter List on evengrounds.com :D I am really clear about the importance of commenting. I feel it’s important to answer questions and to respond to people’s comments regularly to keep the conversation going. Sounds like you’re on track to significantly improve the number of comments you’re receiving on your blog.

Commenting on other blogs has also done many good things for our site such as higher rankings. Another good thing we got is the great relationship with other bloggers and the fact that they also visited and gave relevant comments to our posts.

I used to read Yaro, not sure why I stopped I need to add him back to my reader. As far as my comment habits go, I make a continuous effort to leave a worthwhile comment on all the blogs in my reader as to I RT each article. Doing so benefits both the blogger as well as myself and my circle of online friends. :)
