blogging tips from expert bloggers – New York Times vs SITS girls bloggy boot camp

Adventures in living a healthy, juicy life

Ruffled Feathers

Men know what happens when a group of women get their feathers ruffled.

“War council!”

Men know to make themselves scarce – immediately.  Not a good time for a rooster to be in the hen house.

When it’s another woman who ruffles our feathers, things are not so clear cut.  Being attacked from the inside – friendly fire – as it were, smacks of cruelty.

Introducing Jennifer Mendelsohn, a female blogger who recently published an article that appeared in the NY Times Sunday printed edition and on the NYTimes website on March 14, 2010 on page ST1 of the New York edition.

Jennifer attended “bloggy boot camp” hosted by SITS (the secret is in sauce) in Baltimore, MD. She reported her experiences in an article printed on March 12, 2010 called,

Honey, Don’t Bother Mommy.

I’m Too Busy Building My Brand.

kitten on keyboard of computer

"stop blogging and play with me!"

Oh dear, that title is not a good start.

Now, I’m thinking that you have a mother or you know someone who is a mother.

Busy mums don’t want people questioning what they’re doing with their time.

Mothers are sensitive to anyone suggesting that they’re not available to their kids.

Kids always demand attention.  They never get enough!

There’s a problem with the sardonic, condescending tone that Jennifer used to discuss the woman leading the conference.

Jennifer is a mommy blogger too!  Not cool, Jenny.

SITS or the secret is in the sauce is a commenting community that I’m proud to be a member of.

Here’s a description of the group:

SITS was started in July 2008 by Tiffany Romero and Heather Blair to create a community where ANY woman could be featured- whether she blogged about politics, recipes, business, home decor or all of the above.  A place where women new to blogging and seasoned veterans could expand their readership, connect with other bloggers and be part of an online community.

Now, at over 5,000 members and growing, SITS has become a strong, supportive and diverse community of women.  We have featured hundreds of women, who have in turn, received thousands of comments.  We have promoted their charities, celebrated their successes and mourned their losses.  Together.

SITS has now evolved into a “real life” community as well, with our bloggy boot camp tour, which offers one day events for local women to join together for a day of networking, education and fun.

We have been humbled daily by the support women show one another through our platform – they are kind, generous and engaging – more than we ever hoped for and our gratitude is, well, immeasurable.

The Secret to Success IS Support.

Uh oh, Jennifer! You ruffled THOSE girls’ feathers…yikes!

From the SITS website:

“Welcome to the Sitstahood! We are a group of women bloggers dedicated to supporting one another by leaving comments. Lots and lots of comments.

Whether you are new to blogging and looking for blogs to read, or a veteran looking to expand your readership, a mommy blogger or a single gal, SITS is for you!”

As a way of standing up for themselves and to show support for their SITStahs,a facebook fan page has been created:

Mothers Who Blog speaking out against the NY Times

Heather and Tiffany are encouraging everyone  to take the time to read these response posts and to comment.

“We know there are even more well-written responses out there – in fact, there is an entire facebook group dedicated to this topic.”

There were some good parts to Jennifer Mendelsohn’s NYTimes article.

I’ve included the relevant and most useful portions of her two page report:

Honey, Don’t Bother Mommy.

I’m Too Busy Building My Brand

by Jennifer Mendelsohn

March 12, 2010

According to a 2009 study by BlogHer, iVillage and Compass Partners, 23 million women read, write or comment on blogs weekly. “The blogosphere is where authentic conversation is happening,” said Pamela Parker, a senior manager with Federated Media, which sells ad space for an A-list roster of about 150 bloggers that includes superstars like Dooce and the Pioneer Woman, who’ve parlayed their blogs into lucrative one-woman industries.

“Marketers are recognizing that they want to be there, associated with that authentic conversation,” Ms. Parker said.

And how. According to eMarketer, advertising on blogs will top $746 million by 2012, more than twice the figure for 2007. There are perks, too. In just the last month alone, popular mommy bloggers have been sent to the Olympics, courtesy of Procter & Gamble, and to the Oscars, courtesy of Kodak; and road-tripped to Disney World in a Chevy Traverse, courtesy of G. M. Canada, to help raise awareness about Duchenne’s muscular dystrophy.

I’ve just started a blog on nutrition, blogging is just the same as good diet, in that you are what you eat, or in this case you are what you blog, when you can find the time to chase a share of that $746 million
