Back when I set the goal to meet four UFC fighters (last summer – 2008), I let people know that I wanted to meet Dana White, UFC President, too. I admire him for what he’s accomplished in the time he’s been associated with the UFC.  Read on to find out how “bending the rules” allowed me to meet him, to chat with him, to find out that he knows my first boxing trainer, Jimmy Farrell and to have a picture taken with him. It was like Christmas came early!

Take risks! Make life juicier!

Before we get to the 12 Key Success Factors to Know Before You Bend the Rules (listed at the end of this post), consider the following scenarios…

Know When It’s OK to Bend the Rules…

UFC 107 Memphis, TN After arriving at the hotel, Friday night, I decided to get some dinner before the guys came to pick me up. Someone at the front desk suggested a place that was casual with good BBQ that was just around the corner. Off I went.

As I chatted with my waitress, 0ne of the waiters sidled up to me and said, “Clay Guida’s behind you.”

I said, “How do you know that I know who Clay Guida is?”

He just smiled and motioned to my camera.  “Follow me,” he said.

I hesitated for a moment.  Then I took my own advice about being courageous. There are only two kinds of people in the world: those who act and those who don’t. Know which kind you are and you’ll never regret your choice.”

He led the way over to where a large group of people were gathered.  He asked Clay if I could have my picture taken with him. Clay considered whether he wanted to be interrupted and then graciously said, “OK, come on.”

I hopped into the seat next to him and smiled knowing that the guys from FloMAC (Florian Martial Arts Center) would have something to say about me getting my picture taken with Kenny Florian’s opponent the night before the big fight! Too funny! (“Hey! What’s going on?!”)

What I love about this picture is that it looks like we’re on a “date”. Clay’s mom is sitting behind me with her back to the camera. I didn’t notice it then, but now you can see that she has “Guida’s Mom” on the back of her pink top.  Priceless!!

I was delighted! I returned to my dinner and chatted with my waitress about how funny I thought it was that I just got my picture taken with Clay Guida, a UFC fighter.  The waiter – I don’t even know his name – turned up again.

“Dana White’s in the other room,” he said.

“No, he’s not. Quit teasing me.”

“Yes, he is. Come on, bring your camera.”

He led me to another section of the restaurant. I stood in the doorway and peered into the room. Dana White (UFC President) was sitting at a long table lined with people on both sides. Blink, blink. I turned to the waiter for guidance. GONE! I was on my own.

I did a quick look round for a safety check before I stepped forward, landing in an empty space at the bar. I put my beer on the counter and looked over at the table. Mark DellaGrotte (premier MMA trainer) sat opposite Dana. Ooh, opportunity! I’ve met Mark before and thought “I’ll use him as an excuse for approaching the table.”

I didn’t have to! Dana stood up, walked over and ASKED ME if I wanted to take a picture! OMG! What a delightful and charming man. Amazingly approachable. Dellagrotte took the picture. It turned out beautiful.  I’ll treasure it always.

With encouragement from the waiter – and basically, with his permission to intrude – two fantastic photos and one lifetime memory were born. I would never have moved forward – actually interrupting people at dinner – without trusting that this waiter (a complete stranger) knew how to bend the rules. TRUST! Whew! It worked out beautifully.

The Unofficial Rules for Saving Parking Spots (in Boston) During a Snowstorm

by Guy Gadbois

space saver nativity scene 12 Key Success Factors to Know Before You Bend the Rules

I shoveled this spot! If you're not baby Jesus, don't park here.

Thanksgiving has come and gone and that means winter is right around the corner.  I’d like to take a moment and talk about the time honored Southie tradition of saving parking spots during a snowstorm. Let’s go over the “rules” that were agreed upon by our ancestors.

  1. You can’t put something in your spot until after the snowstorm is over. I understand how inconvenient it is if you have to go to work or a party or wherever and won’t be back until after all the spots on the streets are claimed and you end up 5 blocks away from your house.  But you can’t “hold” your spot until you get back – that’s just bad manners.  It follows the same sentiment as Rule #2.
  2. If you did not shovel your car out, you cannot keep the spot. Self -explanatory right?  Wrong.   How many times have you seen somebody drive their car out of a spot without shoveling any snow and put a barrel there? Not cool.  You must shovel.
  3. If you move someone’s space saver and park your car in its place, you have no right to complain about what happens to your car. However, you are allowed to retaliate as long as you don’t get caught. If you get caught, you shouldn’t complain about the beating you will most likely receive.

...and don't take anything out of the drawers either!

  4. The city allows for space savers up to 48 hours after a storm. Hogwash!  As long as you are not the last one with a cone out, you’re cool. If you live on my street, you’re all set because I have a crazy neighbor who leaves his electrified barrel out until the swan boats are being put in the water (translation: until the sum-mah).

  5. After the 48 hrs are up, the city will pick up any space savers still left out. Seize this opportunity to get rid of anything lying around your house you want to get rid of i.e. radiators, foosball tables, mattresses, old television, whatever you want to get rid of.  Just put it in your space and the city will haul it off.

I hope this review helps make winter a little more bearable and clears up any confusion over spot saving.

Happy shoveling!

    I think DANA is a great guy…

I wonder if I can use these techniques to catch up with the Arsenal football team! You’re so lucky, being able to meet all these guys AND Dana White. I guess it helps when he’s clearly such a great guy, some guys would have asked you to leave or something. I think I’ll have to give more thought into stalking my favourite football (soccer) team!

Snow shovelling is one of those things that is a pain in my rear when it comes around. Luckily I live in the UK and we only get about 6 inches of the stuff at once. My heart goes out to those under 2 feet of the white stuff.
