Oh my god, now Freddie is speaking Russian! What’s next? This man is full of surprises.
Hi Sergey!
Great post! I can’t say I love being the oldest ballerina at the barre, but it sure as heck beats the alternative.
Besides, lots of dancers can say they danced the part of Clara in the Nutcracker one year. But how many can say they did it at age 44

Haha! Good for you, Laura! I’m proud to know you. You’re like Judy Garland, a grown-up playing Dorothy in the “Wizard of Oz”. Fantastic! Thanks for sharing that juicy tidbit with us today.
Hi Laura! Thanks for commenting…You’re another great role model for people who think they’re “too” old to try something new and challenging! Getting your HKC certification at 44 and planning on running another 5k (which I know you’ll rock!) are just two terrific examples! You definitely make your own luck and as Cheryl likes to say, you’re “living a healthy, juicy life”!
Fred, you made my day. I’m honored that you even know who I am. If I am half as tough as you when I’m your age, I’ll be a happy man.

Great post, I enjoyed reading it. I agree with you – staying fit and flexible really can help keep you young and healthy. I have heard many speak of martial arts in general, and I can understand why you enjoy them so much and how they connect with life in general.
I ride classical dressage and as I read your list I found myself thinking that yes, these are also all the reasons I work with horses. They, much like BJJ, keep you flexible – mind, body and soul. Working with them keeps me forever rearranging myself in the context of my life, the world and the universe.
Growth and learning truly take place in many places.
What a great comparision: classical dressage and BJJ! I love it! Keeping your “mind, body and soul” flexible…that’s an awesome image, Lisa. (Mind if I steal it for a future post? Promise I’ll give you props!) Thanks for stopping by and commenting! I really appreciate the kind words.
Too true. Awesome stuff, Fred. I’m an instant fan. At the gym where I teach, there’s a woman who just passed the RKC kettlebell certification. She’s 67 and weighs about 40 lbs. This is the cert that nearly had me in tears.
Testing yourself physically and mentally is the freaking fountain of youth. If you keep it fun, you’ll stay curious and lively. If you’re lively, you’ll be livin’
Great stuff.
Hey Josh! I’m a fan of yours as well…not too often you get to meet “the World’s Strongest Librarian”! Thanks for the comment! Very much appreciated!
I always love hearing about older people doing something active and staying in shape. It makes me wonder why more people in general don’t exercise or take up sports to stay healthy. My grandfather fell recently and is unable to walk properly. More than likely if he did a sport like this or weight trained he would not have fractured bones.
Thanks for commenting! Exercise is definitely a key component to good health…I read somewhere that most “seniors” fall and injury themselves due to poor leg strength and a diminished sense of balance. Both of those things can be improved through weight-bearing exercise and “balance activities”, such as hill walking, bodyweight exercises, yoga, tai chi, “walking on the curb” or simply standing on one leg and balancing) Of course, before starting any new exercise plan, a doctor’s approval is needed…
What a great post!! Fred is stronger and tougher than LOTS of guys I know (who also happen to be 30 years his junior!) Age ain’t nuthin but a number!! Thanks for proving it yet again Fred!
Thank you for the kind words,Cath!
(Hey, if I ever have to fight someone, please make sure it’s one of THOSE guys!)
As always, muchas gracias, mi amiga Colombiana!

Joanna,
Too old!! No way! Someone I know – knows a woman – and I know this is true because I’ve seen her picture and I know people who know people who train at her gym in Maryland – but she’s 70 and still working as a personal trainer. Grey-haired Granny is still hot! Bet she knocks out one-armed push-ups, Rocky-style! You can too!
Hey Cheryl! You’re a PERFECT role model for anyone “over 40″ who wonders if they can hack it…whether that’s BJJ, boxing, snow boarding, rock climbing, weight training, running a 5k, or just getting started with some kind of exercise program.(Read her bio, folks…you’ll understand instantly)
Keep rocking it and showing us how it’s done! Better than Houdini: “RAGSDINI” fits like a Cleto Reyes glove!
Thanks for the opportunity to post on your site!

You’re number 1 in my book, Freddie. I’m so glad we connected. This post rocks!
This totally lights a fire in my belly…in a good way! That’s it…I’m not giving up on my goal to do one arm push ups. Yesterday I told myself I was just too old on my failed attempt. I’m not. Game on!
Joanna: No way your too old…check out this video by a friend of mine named Abby:
http://imnotneurotic.blogspot.com/2009/03/just-for-funa-video.html
Just keep ‘making your own luck” by working on them: start shifting your bodyweight to your strong side a little more each time you do pushups…eventually you’ll be able to lift your ‘weakside’ hand! Guaranteed!
