Must-Know Habit for Staying Young - from the Inside Out #46: Find Something that You Really Love to Do

Introducing two twisted sisters from Texas better known on their blog of the same name as the Midlife Gals.

SalGal and KK have officially entered the “Genuine Health Gift Basket Give-Away” with their first guest post on ThatGirlisFunny.

Read on and find out how these girls use yoga  – and an occasional martini  – to help them practice new habits they’ve learned from reading my free e-book “51 Must-Know Habits for Staying Young – from the Inside Out”.

Wouldn’t it be good to learn how to hold a martini glass  between your toes whilst doing yoga postures. That’s living life juicy – Texas style!  Cheryl Ragsdale

KK Goes First

After having spent THIRTY days and nights at an ashram in the middle of an “illiterate” county in Virginia in order to procure my Yoga instructor teaching certificate, I KNOW that the powers of a Guru’s persuasion are STRONG. The bliss ninnies did their darndest to shape, mold, brainwash and transform me from a cynical, jaded ex-revolutionary of the sixties into someone who wears pajamas, bows in honor of the guru and eats nothing but TOFU at every meager meal.

I survived the ordeal, received my teaching certificate, then I got the hell out of there.  Came straight home and opened a yoga studio called, Yoga for Smokers, Drinkers, Meat-Eaters and Non-Believers, much to the chagrin of the wack-a-doos from the ashram.

For background accompaniment, I play Boz Scaggs instead of Ravi Shankar and his grating Sitar music. I renamed the postures because who can remember Bhujangasana?  I just called that one the “I’ve Fallen and I Can’t Get Up” posture.

We laugh, we learn and my students leave satisfied with their progress.  I allow them to discern their own spiritual identity (if they want one).  Bending their beliefs is NOT my job, but their own. I just teach them how to bend their bodies.

Hairy arm…I mean, Hari Om!!

PS- I wrote a novel about my experience at the ashram called, “A Texan Goes to Nirvana”.  It’s an invitation to giggle over my cynical observations about daily life at the ashram.  If you know a publisher who might be interested in working with me, please let me know.  I need one who isn’t afraid of the ninnie’s version of karma.

Must-Know Habit for Staying Young - from the Inside Out #45: Get rid of people who taunt or tease as you're trying out new things.

At my age,  I’ve just got to keep moving. The stretching and bending and reaching helps keep my middle-aged body nimble enough to get up from a chair without grunting. I can sit down at night, peaceful and happy in the knowledge that I’ve done something that will keep me from growing into the shape of my favorite Barko-Lounger.

I don’t do Yoga as well as KK does, but I don’t let that stop me from doing it anyway.  I do the best I can. Sometimes, I think I must look like a manatee trying to do ballet.

I can do the “Sun Salutation” pretty well and I’m okay at the “I’ve Fallen And I Can’t Get Up”, but I have trouble with the “Horny Cat” and the “Check Out Your Vajayjay”.  KK has assured me that these are the correct technical names for these postures.  She should know because she went to an ashram in Kentucky or some place like that.

Yoga, for me, is like talking to my 87-year-old mother. I have to take a deep breath and hope I don’t get all bent out of shape.  Afterwards, I feel like I’ve done something really good, but I still need a drink.
