Chuck be nimble. Chuck be quick.  Please don’t dance like a candlestick.

At first, I thought it was a joke.  But it wasn’t. Chuck Liddell, former Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) Light Heavyweight Champion, is a contestant on ABC’s “Dancing With The Stars” (DWTS)!

Can Chuck, better known as  “the IceMan”, transfer skills he uses when fighting to dancing with a partner?  Chuck  is nimble. He moves fast.  Dancing requires rhythm, timing and reading your partner, Anna Trebunskaya – in this case.  As I watched videos of him practicing, I was struck by his willingness to take on new challenges. “I don’t get embarrassed easy,” he said.

What a great way to look at life. I don’t get embarrassed easy. The willingness to try something new – to take a risk and learn something completely foreign – like the foxtrot, for instance, without worrying what anyone thinks about it.  That’s living juicy!

Here are 7 important steps to consider as you take on learning something new:

  1. give yourself permission to learn
  2. give yourself time to learn
  3. have supportive people around you while you learn
  4. be supportive of yourself while you’re learning
  5. be prepared to learn (Chuck got into shape and lost weight for this competition)
  6. tell other people what you’re up to: No Keeping Secrets
  7. have fun and enjoy yourself!

Chuck made an agreement to be on the show as a competitor.  He made a bet with Dana White, UFC President, that he would be a certain weight by September 15, 2009.  Dana lost the bet and gave Chuck $10,000 for weighing in at 213lbs. Chuck may not win the show – his scores were rather low, but he won’t give up.  What does he have to lose? He’s becoming a man who can dance and fight – that’s a juicy combination. He gets my vote. Well, he will next week when I watch the show.

Here’s a video of Chuck and his partner, Anna, performing on ABC’s “DWTS”

He caught the hat! Chuck says, “Vote for me! I want to stay on the show and learn some more dances.”

Chuck reminds me of Don McGrath’s 5 Healthy Habits of Athletes.

  • Find an activity you love
  • Define a goal for that activity and write it down
  • Create a plan for how to reach the goal and write it down
  • Define a way to hold yourself accountable
  • Execute the plan, be accountable, and have fun!

Chuck incorporated all 5 habits plus one more: be courageous.  Remember Charlie Brown and the dream he had about dancing with the little red-headed girl? Even though he’s only a cartoon character, I feel Charlie’s sweaty palms and heavy feet as he approaches that little girl for their first dance.

Is your life juicy?

What’s missing? Maybe you have an activity that you already love, but you haven’t applied the other 4 habits yet.  Maybe you haven’t found an activity you’re passionate about. Get busy! Live fearlessly! Give up worrying about being embarrassed. Stop worrying about what people might say.  Everyone feels the same way when confronted with something risky or learning something new.  Whether you’re a Boomer,   a Gen X or a Gen Y, it’s not too late to take a walk on the wild side!

What a great blog, Cheryl! It inspires me to keep on going. Sadly I can’t watch Chuck in action (copyright restrictions) but I wish him all the best!

Chuck danced the tango last night with his partner, Anna Trebunskaya. Still a bit stiff, but engaging. I love a man who can be vulnerable and strong at the same time. Wonder what he’ll do next week? Can’t wait! Go Chuck!
