One man’s junk is another man’s treasure…getting to know Daniel Edlen makes me seriously regret leaving my albums on the side of the road with a sign marked “free”.  If only I’d known!  Check out what Daniel does using white acrylic paint on black vinyl LP’s (factoid: LP stands for long-playing).

“I’m trying to figure out which one piece of mine best represents what I do quickly. I mean which one would most people look at and go, ‘hey yeah! that’s…’ and then think, it’s the coolest thing they’ve ever seen.”

front by daniel edlenDaniel gets an album – by Miles Davis for example – and hand paints an easily recognizable image of Miles ON the album. He’ll paint any musician as long as he has an album recorded by that particular artist.

A Recent Review

The beauty of art is that there is nothing that idefines it’s boundaries or rules. You can work with any media on any surface and it is art. Daniel Edlen found his niche painting portraits of American legends on original vinyl LP records using monotone acrylic paint. He’s chosen to stick with favorite artists such as Ray Charles and B.B. King, but his portrait of a young Audrey Hepburn has gotten him some much deserved attention. The records are mounted on top of the cover, both of which go inside a frame. His style reminds me of Pointillism and I am impressed by how well he captures the faces of artists we all love. Check out his gallery on Flickr and his website for more information about his work and on purchasing.

Can the record still be played?

“I love this question! The painted side would sound quite horrible and most likely gunk up the needle, but the other side might still play decently. I try to find records that are already damaged to the point they might be thrown away, so most likely you wouldn’t want to risk it anyway.”

I met Daniel on twitter. His username is @vinylart. You can also chat with Daniel on his facebook fan page.  “I really hope that page can be a gathering place for people who like what I do, people who like human creativity in general.  I want to get some good discussions going. Make it about music trivia or deep philosophy, whatever, I’m game. I’ll jump in when I have something to say and I’ll post updates of relevant exciting stuff. So, if you’re on facebook and haven’t yet, check it out!”

This is an amazing artwork! Nowadays, a lot of people consider these LPs as junk and never have a second thought about making it useful again. Thanks to Daniel, he found his way of making this LP lucrative through his work of art.

This is so cool. All of my records are still in good condition, but it would probably be pretty easy to go to a garage sale and pick up some that could be used for this. He’s an amazing artist!
